Ecuador were unable to make it six out of six for South America teams, when they failed to qualify for the Round of 16 after going down to France at the famous Maracana stadium in Rio De Janeiro.

The game ended in a stale mate and saw France top Group E.

Needing a win to assure qualification, Equador were the first South American team to be eliminated after Switzerland beat Honduras in the group’s other game to secure the groups final qualifying spot.

Facing the already difficult task of trying to beat an in-form France team, any chance Ecuador had was lost when their captain, Anotinio Valencia, was given a red card in the 50th minute for an over-the-top challenge.

They were always chasing the game after that, and with only ten men, never looked like getting what would have been an unlikely win.

France dominated most of the game, and although they weren’t as fluent and clinical in front of goal as they had been in previous games, were never really threatened by Ecuador and never looked like losing the tie.

A draw was all France needed to secure top spot in the group and they played the game with a defensive line-up, using the opportunity to rest striker Olivier Giroud, and playing with only one striker up front for most of it.

The tactic worked as France held out for a o-o draw to advance and set-up a meeting with Nigeria in the first knockout round.
