Belgium battle back to down Algeria

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – Algeria and Belgium laboured in their first game at the 2014 Fifa World Cup with Algeria suffering a 2 – 1 defeat despite having scored first.

Riding on expectation and the recently acquired ‘underdog’ status, the Belgian national team came to the encounter sure to win.

A starting line up encompassing Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany and Romelu Lukako, the Belgian team were set.

A penalty awarded to Algeria in the 24th minute after forward Sofiane Feghouli of Algeria was taken down in the 18-yard box by Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen.

Feghouli took the penalty and scored Algeria’s first Fifa World Cup goal in 28 years.

The second half didn’t offer much difference to the first, Algeria did however seem to have the upper hand.

That was the case till 65th minute Substitute Marouane Fellaini having been on the pitch for five minutes handed Belgium a life-line with a 70th minute header bringing the game to equal terms.

A text book counter attack ensued in the 80th minute involving Hazard playing a lovely through ball to middle fielder Dries Mertens who took a powerful shot leaving Algerian goal minder Rais Mbolhi beaten.

The two teams continued their respective attempts, but it was Belgium who left the pitch victors.
